Expertise and Qualifications

John Pugh is the owner of Anchor Business Systems and has:-

  • a degree in Accounting from Macquarie University,
  • varied experience in:-
    • business,
    • financial systems and
    • helping small business owners manage and understand their finances.

Degree in Accounting

John completed a part-time degree in Accounting from Macquarie University while working at the Tax Office in Sydney.

As a result, the principles and expertise gained from this period continue to be invaluable for helping small business owners with their finances.

Registered BAS Agent

The Tax Practitioners Board exists to ensure that people offering tax related services have the required qualifications, training and personal qualities.

To meet these objectives, a BAS Agent must:-

  • have a Certificate IV or higher qualification in accounting or bookkeeping
  • have extensive experience in this area
  • demonstrate that they are a fit and proper person and
  • undertake a significant amount of Professional Development.

John is a registered BAS Agent, so you can rely on us for your bookkeeping peace of mind.

Training and Professional Associations

All roles have required extensive training to keep up to date with changes in the business environment.

John has been a member of a professional Accounting Association since graduating and is currently a member of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers.

This dynamic Association provides a wide range of professional development and related activities to help keep us up to date with the rapid changes in this industry and provides a direct benefit for our clients.

Business Experience

Tax Office and ACCC

John started working with the Tax Office in Sydney, initially in clerical positions and processing tax returns. An interest in systems saw a move to roles in these areas in Sydney and Canberra.

An opportunity with the ACCC saw a move to that agency dealing with a range of businesses as a Project Officer.

These roles provided an invaluable insight into how government agencies work that continues to be useful when helping clients sort out issues that involve the government.

Account Manager with NCR

Following the ACCC, John became an account manager for NCR in Canberra and Adelaide.

NCR is an international computer company and at the time was a well known name and a leader in providing computer technology for business systems.

This role provided invaluable experience in computers, business systems and marketing.

Own Business

After leaving NCR, John spent several years in financial roles before going out on his own to concentrate on helping small businesses with their finances and systems.

Initially, this involved:-

  • running training courses for business software such as Word and Excel and
  • providing custom software for businesses using desktop software development tools.
    • The experience with developing software has been very useful in understanding how software works and in troubleshooting problems encountered by clients.

The following activities were within the structure of Anchor Business Systems.


Around this time, MYOB was released in Australia and dramatically improved the accounting systems for small businesses.

John became one of the first MYOB Professional Partners and continued until recently. At this stage the business concentrated on helping clients to set up and use MYOB, and handled bookkeeping for some clients.


Coming to terms with the GST and BAS returns was a major challenge – we assisted with this change for many businesses.

When the GST was introduced:-

  • bookkeeping services were not regulated,
  • many ‘bookkeepers’ had no accounting qualifications or experience.

As a result, the average quality in this area was quite low.

To address these concerns, the government set up the Tax Practitioners Board and a register of qualified BAS Agents.

John is a registered BAS Agent and is pleased with the high quality of the bookkeeping profession as a result of these changes.


When Xero started to make its presence felt, John was impressed with the concepts behind the software:-

  • easy to use in a business
  • automated bank feeds
  • user-friendly bank reconciliation
  • available anywhere anytime with an internet connection
  • save time for businesses, Bookkeepers and Accountants
  • allow business owners, Bookkeepers and Accountants to view the same up to date data at the same time
  • integration with other cloud based systems as needed

After some bad experiences with new accounting software that had not lived up to the promises, John was cautious about adopting Xero.

However, after speaking to several Xero users and running a trial on his business,  John adopted Xero as our preferred accounting software.

A bonus from using Xero is that we help many clients throughout Australia using email, telephone and online meetings.

Bookkeeping and Advisory Services

With cloud accounting systems able to handle much of the routine bookwork, we now concentrate on helping business owners with services including:-

  • review and streamline their business operations to save time and improve their businesses
  • set up and use Xero
  • staff training
  • payroll processing
  • end of month reconciliation and reporting
  • prepare BAS, superannuation and other returns as needed
  • liaise with Tax Agents and other professionals as needed
  • planning, monitoring and forecasting:-
    • management information
    • cashflow
    • profit
